Oh Boy. We all love RPG Maker, right? Well this game is a real doozy. I just finished Felvidek. It took two sittings of roughly two hours each. After playing Felvidek, I think I’m ready to take on Canterbury Tales or Beowulf for some light reading! This game spends a lot of time painting a picture of the medieval Slovakian landscape and of the many power struggles going on during the game. But mostly…. it has great music and an art style all its own.

The Story

Felvidek is a plot heavy game. You MUST take the time to read the dialogue, or you will get lost! I enjoyed reading the old English/Slovakian/Germanic mix of languages going on in the game, but it’s not going to be for everyone. Here is an example of some of the games thick dialogue.

"Priest! By what decree dost thou recline in this place? 'Tis thy duty to safeguard these maidens from the clutches of the devil, yet thou partakest in devilry alongside them.

You play as the knight Palov, joined throughout the game by several period appropriate figures. In an attempt to investigate the cause behind the recent explosion at a nearby castle, you uncover much more than you bargained for: Hussites, cults, people from far away places! This game has a lot going on.

Music

Musically this game is taking a few notes from Hylics and Hylics 2, in my opinion. The soundtrack features several psychedelic style tracks with a very distorted and progressive sound. I won’t go into too much detail, but the music was a big part of the experience for me. Check out the trailer for more on that.

Art/Graphics

The trailer above really shows off some of the interesting sprites used in this game. I’m not sure what media was used for this, but the style give a very period feel to the scenes. I was also surprised to find that the game features several 3D cutscenes! If I have any complaints about the art direction, the combat menus are a bit bland.

Game Play

How does it play? like an RPG maker game. The combat focuses primarily on getting past armored units and focusing on support/heavy hitting enemies to avoid losing to much life. The combat isn’t difficult, but does reward the player for making smart choices. The game does feature some amusing items and equipment that help set the tone.

Conclusion

Overall, Felvidek is a solid 9/10 on the indie RPG game scale (which makes it a 7/10 on a normal game scale). The art direction, music, and setting kept me engaged. The three to four hour playtime is just long enough to get your fill of the adventure, without overstaying its welcome. The price is… maybe higher than I would like, but I wouldn’t make my decision based on the price. If you don’t have the $10,99, its worth waiting for a sale. If you do have the $10,99, go support this creator!
